1,2 MILLION PASSENGERS AT SKOPJE AND OHRID AIRPORTS IN THE 1ST HALF OF 2019

Through Skopje International Airport and Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport in the first 6 months of 2019 traveled 1,2 million (1.163.667) passengers, which is an increase of 12% compared to the same period of 2018, reports TAV Macedonia, the airport operator.

At the same time, the total number of flights at both Macedonian airports is 9.792 with 8% annual increase.

- We are happy to announce that the double digit increase rate of passenger’s number at both Macedonian airports continues in the first half of 2019 as well, and that it is higher than the EU average of 5,9%. We expect the passenger growth to keep the same pace, and to be even higher in third and the fourth quarter of the year, due to the opening of the 4 new destinations from Skopje Airport: Baden-Baden and Bremen opened in March, Larnaca and Turku to be opened at the end of July, and the 6 new destinations from Ohrid Airport: Malmo and Milan, opened in March,   Dusseldorf and Stuttgart opened last week, and Memmingen and Dortmund to be opened at the end of July. The Macedonian airports are “blossoming“, it became among the fastest growing airports on the Balkans and in Europe, and we are glad that it is recognized by the citizens of the neighboring countries, who use it regularly for their travels. We will continue to work on its development, with an aim to transform it into main regional air traffic hubs, stated Alper Ersoy, TAV Macedonia General Manager.

Skopje International Airport currently serves 42 destinations, from which 33 are low cost, operated by 13 airlines, while Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport serves 20 destinations, from which - 8 are regular routes through the whole year and low cost at the same time, operated by 13 airlines.

According to passenger traffic, from January until June 2019, Istanbul (both Istanbul and Sabiha Gokcen) is the most frequent destination at Skopje International Airport with 10,1% market share, followed by Zurich (6,9%), Basel (5,4%), Vienna (5,4%), Malmo (4,3%), Bratislava (3,4%).

Regarding airline’s share in passenger traffic, Wizz Air transported the largest number of passengers in the first 6 months, with 65,1% market share, followed by Turkish Airlines with 7,0% market share, Austrian Airlines (5,3%), Germania Flug (4,2%), Pegasus Airlines ((3,4%), Croatia Airlines (2,9%).
The cargo traffic at Skopje International Airport also has a big annual increase of 31,7%, reaching 1.960.388 kg total cargo traffic, in the period January-June 2019.
Reviewing the air traffic statistics separately, Skopje Airport handled 1.059.223 passengers with 8,5% increase, while Ohrid Airport - 104.444 and 62,9% annual increase, in the first half of the year.
Following the route network development, both Macedonian airports received recognitions by the world’s most respectable aviation association – Airports Council International (ACI).
Skopje International Airport in March this won the Airport Service Quality Award (ASQ) for the 4th time, as the Best Airport in Europe in the category of airports with under 2 million passengers annually for 2018, after the same award received for 2012, 2013 and 2015, by ACI.
At the same time, Airports Council International (ACI) ranked Ohrid Airport as one of the top 3 airports in Europe, according to highest passenger’s growth rate in the first quarter of 2019, which was is 63,9%.
